For most people, purchasing a home is the single largest investment that they will make in their lifetime, so it’s not uncommon to feel some anxiety around it.
Since there’s so much more involved than simply finding a property you like and making an offer on it, it’s crucial that you fully understand how the entire process works.
Here are 4 easy ways to get past the fear:
1. There’s a book for that.
This book “Home Buying Kit for Dummies” is phenomenal, and I recommend it to all new homebuyers. Read it before you start your home buying journey to fully understand the process, know what questions to ask, and better prepare for the unexpected.
2. Meet with a lender.
You can meet with a mortgage lender without obligation. A conversation with a lending professional can help you understand how much home you can actually afford to buy. Remember, the more information you gather, the less fearful you’ll be.
3. Meet with a Realtor.
After meeting with a mortgage professional, contact some local Realtors in your area. There’s no upfront cost to you, as your Realtor gets paid out of the seller side of the transaction when you purchase a home. A conversation with a Realtor can give you a better understanding of the current market trends in your area and how best to prepare.
4. Learn on social media.
There are countless Reddit threads and Facebook groups that focus on home buying. Spend some time lurking in these so that you can learn from people who are in the middle of the home buying process and from those who have already done it. Learning from real-life examples can give you more confidence.
Not long ago, I spoke with two different clients who were looking to buy their first home.
The first client was well-informed and had spent time with a lender and had done a lot of research online, reading articles about the steps involved in buying a house.
The second had done no research and was experiencing a lot of unease.
The first client felt comfortable connecting with a Realtor, she had toured several homes, and she was narrowing down her options before making an offer.
The second is now reading this book I just recommended and will get back to me when she feels more prepared to move forward.
Helping clients understand the process is one of the many ways I help them prepare for the unexpected and avoid costly mistakes when they purchase their first home.
